More Boomer Sooner Music

Music from the University of Oklahoma

In addition to the Boomer Sooner Fight Song that has energized players, students and Sooner fans for over 100 years, the university has other traditional songs that exemplify student life for the University of Oklahoma.

Oklahoma!

It is unprecedented that an entire state is defined by such a song, but Rodgers and Hammerstein’s title song, Oklahoma, is the official song of the state of Oklahoma as well as a defining song for the University of Oklahoma.
The Pride of Oklahoma Marching Band plays a rousing version of the tune that starts with a fanfare that eludes to the Boomer Sooner Fight Song before breaking into the traditional, Broadway version of the song.  At the end, the band returns with some haunting musical phrases of Boomer Sooner to end the performance.

Oklahoma!

(by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, from the musical “Oklahoma!” 1943).

Oklahoma, where the wind comes sweepin’ down the plain
And the wavin’ wheat can sure smell sweet
When the wind comes right behind the rain.
Oklahoma, Ev’ry night my honey lamb and I
Sit alone and talk and watch a hawk
Makin’ lazy circles in the sky.

We know we belong to the land
And the land we belong to is grand!
And when we say
Yeeow! Ayipioeeay!
We’re only sayin’
You’re doin’ fine, Oklahoma!
Oklahoma, O.K. L – A – H – O – M – A
OKLAHOMA!
Yeeow!

The Oklahoma University Chant

The university’s traditions web page tells the story behind “The Chant”:

“Since 1938, the OU Chant has been part of OU football pre-game activities. It was written by Jessie Lone Clarkson Gilkey, who directed the OU girl’s glee club from 1936 to 1938 and in 1937 was voted Outstanding Faculty Woman.”
